Medical Laboratory Technology, AAS (A45420)

The Medical Laboratory Technology curriculum prepares individuals to perform clinical laboratory procedures in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and immunohematology that may be used in the maintenance of health and diagnosis/treatment of disease.

Course work emphasizes mathematical and scientific concepts related to specimen collection, laboratory testing and procedures, quality assurance and reporting/recording and interpreting findings involving tissues, blood, and body fluids.

Graduates may be eligible to take the examination given by the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Employment opportunities include laboratories in hospitals, medical offices, industry, and research facilities.

Instructional Service Agreements


The Medical Laboratory Technology program is an established collaborative agreement with Beaufort Community College. This agreement allows students to take general education courses at Pitt Community College and the remaining courses at Beaufort Community College if accepted to the program. Beaufort Community College will award the Medical Laboratory Technology degree.

Allowable Substitutions:


The following General Education courses are not offered at Pitt Community College; however, completed credit in the courses can be used to fulfill specific subrequirements as noted:

Communication: ENG-114 in place of ENG 112  

Humanities/Fine Arts: ENG-131, HUM-121, HUM-122, HUM-150, HUM-160, PHI-215

Other Requirement: ACA-118
